AUWCL Celebrates Commencement 2014

American University Washington College of Law welcomed Judy A. Smith '86, founder and president of Smith & Company, a leading strategic and crisis communications firm, as the 2014 Commencement Speaker. Smith is also co-executive producer of ABC's "Scandal." The law school's commencement was held May 18 at American University's Bender Arena. The law school and Dean Claudio Grossman also welcomed graduates, their families, and friends to a reception at the Organization of American States in honor of commencement. MORE

2014 Graduate Fills a Gap in Services for the Deaf Community

For Talila Lewis, commencement 2014 marked the beginning of a new chapter for HEARD (Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf), the non-profit she founded in 2011 that works to make the U.S. justice system more accessible to deaf and hard of hearing individuals. MORE

19th Annual Inter-American Moot Court Competition

The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law held the 19th Annual Inter-American Moot Court Competition, co-sponsored by the Inter-American Court on Human Rights. A total of 99 teams participated from a record number of 27 different countries, involving more than 300 students, professors, and human rights professionals. MORE

Alumnus Gives Back to Support Students with their Career Goals

Alumnus Millard Bennett '77 attended AUWCL, but was "reintroduced" to the law school when his son attended. Through his involvement in the Myers Society and Dean's Advisory Council, Bennett has organized many networking-related events from GANE sessions to "speed networking" to support AUWCL students with their career goals. Alumni Chosen as Fulbright Scholars

The Fulbright Program awards approximately 8,000 grants annually, allowing students, scholars, teachers, and professionals to study, teach, and conduct research at institutions worldwide. This year, recent graduate Matthew Smith '14 and alumna Mina Trudeau '12 were chosen as scholars. MORE

Each spring, AUWCL proudly hosts the Annual Hispanic Law Conference, bringing together inspiring and successful individuals and institutions devoted to the progress of Latinos in the U.S. and the region. The 2014 conference focused on the impact of immigration reform on access to justice. MORE

Dean Varona Named to List of "50 Top Law Professors Under 50"

Associate Dean Anthony Varona has been named to the list of "50 Top Law Professors Under 50" by Lawyers of Color magazine. This list, part of the magazine's Diversity Issue, recognizes minority law professors who are making significant contributions to the legal profession. VIEW THE LIST

Team Competes in International Finals of WTO Moot Court Competition in Geneva

Margaret Kim, Semira Nikou, Lillyana Daza Jaller, and Matthew D'Orsi competed in the final round of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law, held in Geneva, Switzerland May 13-18. The AUWCL team represented the North America region alongside teams from Georgetown and Harvard. MORE

Aaron Wong '10, counsel for transportation company Carey International, started with the company as an intern during his second year at AUWCL.  Wong appreciated the real-world, collaborative nature of law school at AUWCL, and says his professors were great resources with broad networks. MORE

Immigrant Justice Clinic Report Recognized by CLEA

The law school's Immigrant Justice Clinic (IJC) received an Honorable Mention for the Clinical Legal Education Association (CLEA) Award for Excellence in a Public Interest Case or Project for its "Taken for a Ride" report, highlighting the experiences of migrant guest workers in the traveling fair and carnival industries. Faculty Memorandum to Senate Judiciary Committee

AUWCL faculty and colleagues nationwide have sent a letter to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee about the discourse surrounding the nomination of Debo Adegbile as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. Adegbile was criticized for his representation of an inmate on death row. The memo outlines the importance of right to counsel and pro bono representation to meet unmet legal needs.
